The sun glittered in the sky as Adrienne perched herself on a stone statue at the edge of the courtyard. She watched people pass in clusters, some of them families and couples, while chewing slowly on a sandwich she had purchased at the vending machine. A slew of thoughts filled her head as she eyed the matching machines on the other end of the courtyard. Some of them were happy thoughts while others were rather grim.

If I find someone and I don't like them, what would I do?

Is it really that easy?

Have I been denying myself happiness?

Everything jumbled together into one, long stream of phrases that made her stomach tighten. She set her sandwich down on her purse and tapped the faux leather with a chipped nail. The rugged edges of her nail caught her eye and she raised it up to inspect it, picking at a loose end that was beginning to hang off. She grimaced at the sight.

I really need to get myself together, she thought. I'm practically falling apart.

Frowning, she looked back up at the machines and watched as different couples met on the other side. The machines were lined all along the outer edge of the courtyard and beyond that was a strip where many couples met to eat dinner, get coffee, or even go dancing. It was a convenient set up to help people meet each other in a safe environment, though the Federation did well to match those who would be highly compatible without fear of repercussion.

It was a rare occasion to hear of a couple who didn't make it. Often times, it was due to some technical error, but it would quickly be remedied with the proper match and a gift of a honeymoon cruise to the planet of their choice. Adrienne sighed at this thought.

The familiar jingle of a match being made shook her from her thoughts and she looked up to see a happy couple waltzing over to the other side of the courtyard. She grimaced, the sandwich seeming to churn in her stomach. It wasn't that it made her unhappy; it made her nervous. If she were to match with someone, would it really be all rainbows and sunshine? They all looked so happy.

And here she was sitting on a concrete slab, staring off in the distance like some creep, tracing her sandwich with a chipped fingernail while trying to retain the contents of her stomach.

Maybe they're right, she thought sullenly. Maybe I really do need it to fulfill me.

Frustrated with her circling thoughts, she reached down into her bag and rummaged around for the galactic coin her boss had given her earlier in the day. The metal felt cold against her fingers. She traced the edge briefly before pulling it out, turning it over in her hands as the sun reflected off the surface. It winked at her.

She gave a sigh and then stood from her perch, nearly forgetting her bag. As she grabbed it, a few birds fluttered in the distance and seemed to fly in the direction of the machines.
